The Indian Government estimates that 301 women die annually for every 100,000 live births. Many of these deaths happen at home or on the way to a birth facility, and therefore, go unrecorded and uncounted. The National Health Mission (NHM) aims to increase the number of institutional deliveries attended by skilled birth attendants and in turn reduce infant and maternal mortality to meet Millenium Development Goals (MDG) 4 and 5.
Under the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), pregnant women and infants are entitled to free transfer from home to hospital, inter-facilities transfer in case of referral and transport from hospital to home.
Ziqitza Health Care operates the 102 Referral Transport Service in Odisha for pregnant woman and newborns.
